Day 1: Marrakesh – Telouet – Ouarzazate – Kasbah de Taourirt

Kasbah de Taourirt
Kasbah de Taourirt

Your trip starts with breakfast in Marrakesh, from where you will be headed to the south of Ouarzazate. Going through the High Atlas Mountains, you will be able to enjoy the outstanding colorful view of vibrant colors, and see many Berber villages on the side of the road. When you reach the highest point of 2060m, you will have some free time to enjoy the quietness and the view. From here you will change direction towards the Glaouia Kasbah – The Glaoui Kasbah is kept locked-up, but if you go to the entrance you will find a guard with a key to open the building. If you are interested in learning a bit about Glaoui Kasbah and its history you can ask the guard to give you a tour. Continuing to Ounila valley, a perfect place to get an insight about fossils and fauna, unique landscapes of green and red contrasts with vibrant colors. The next stop is the best-preserved Kasbahs of Morocco (the historical, 11th century Kasbah of Ait-Ben-Haddou), a place where many famous movies like Babel, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven were filmed. The day ends in Ouarzazate.

Day 2: Ouarzazate – Skoura – Kelaa M’Gouna – Dades valley & Gorges

The second day includes a trip through Skoura, where you will visit the beautiful oases and see one more breathtaking Kasbah called Amredyle. Next stop – the spot where roses festival takes place every May, each year – the famous Kelaa M’Gouna. From here you will have the chance to travel to the Atlas Mountains where you can meet the locals. More exactly, you can get to know the culture of the nomads, see their way of life, habits and daily routines. I have to mention their lifestyle is very different to what you are used to. Just right when the off-road finishes and the asphalt begins you’ll see Ait Youl Kasbah and the green valley of Dades.

Day 3: Dades Gorges – Todra Gorges – Merzouga

Todra Gorges
Todra Gorges

After breakfast, you’ll drive to the desert via the impressive Todra Gorges or the so called Grand Canyons of Morocco. Here you have the time to take a short walk between the canyons, admire the views and enjoy the quietness. The next stop includes fossils fabrication and is located towards Tinejdad and Erfoud. The day ends with a camel ride from the Erg Chebbi dunes, and a shelter in the middle of the dunes.

Day 4: Merzouga – Khamlia – Taouz – Ouzina – Ramlia – Mharch

Taouz

You will stop in Khamlia village to enjoy listening to live Gnaoua music which is played by the local, then continue on rarely frequented off-road, and in a seldom-visited sector you will experience landscapes very different from those that you may know. You’ll discover the true Sahara with its thousands of Acacia trees, you will approach the Algerian border (rock drawing) etc. Last, but definitely not least, you will spend the night in an accommodation in the middle of nowhere.

Day 5: M’Hamid – Zagora

M'Hamid
M’Hamid

The trip continues via Paris Dakar Track, where you will experience other whole of the Saharan dunes. M’Hamid is a small village in Zagora region of Morocco, 98 km after Zagora, one of the two places in Morocco where Sahara begins (another is Merzouga). M’Hamid gets fewer visitors than Merzouga and is arguably more “authentic.” The day ends in Zagora.

Day 6: Zagora – Tamgroute – M’Hamid – Erg Chegaga dunes

Erg Chegaga
Erg Chegaga

After breakfast, you’ll visit the Zaouia, Koranic library and you will also see the workshop of pottery makers and later drive Off-road to Erg Chegaga desert to enjoy the sunsets and spend the night in nomad tents. Erg Chegaga (or Chigaga) is one of two major Saharan ergs of the Sahara in Morocco, the other being the Erg Chebbi near Merzouga. Because it is relatively difficult to access – it is only accessible by 4×4, camel or on foot – Erg Chigaga remains significantly less visited then Erg Chebbi, which can make for a much more memorable dessert experience.

Day 7: Erg Chegaga dunes – Foum Zguid – Taznakht – Ouarzazate

Kasbah de Taourirt

You will wake early to see the exquisite sunrise, then have breakfast and drive via Fum Zguid. The first stop is to see the nomads living in the tents, learn their habits and lifestyle. Then, continuing through the dry lake of Iriqui, Fum Zguit village and Taznakht the capital of Ouaouzguite rag. The day ends at 17:00 by arriving to Ouarzazate.

Day 8: Ouarzazate – Ait-Ben-Haddou – Marrakesh

Ouarzazate

Before heading back to Marrakesh you will visit the Taourirt Kasbah and after a 30-minute drive, you’ll visit also one of the best-preserved Kasbahs of Morocco (the historical-11th century Kasbah of Ait-Ben-Haddou), a place where many famous movies were filmed like Babel, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven… at the end of the trip, you will be taken back to Marrakesh.
